In networking, bitrate describes data transfer rate. In audio and video, bitrate describes how much data is used to represent media over time. More bitrate can allow more detail, but it also increases bandwidth use and file size.

COMMON UNITS

Audio often uses Kbps, while video streams and internet connections commonly use Mbps. The useful bitrate depends on codec efficiency, resolution, frame rate, complexity and quality targets.
