WI-FI VS ETHERNET

Both can use the same internet service, but the local link to your router can change throughput, latency and consistency.

LOCAL NETWORK / RADIO VS CABLE

THE INTERNET PLAN IS ONLY ONE PART

Traffic from a Wi-Fi device must first cross a shared radio link before it reaches the router. Distance, walls, interference, channel congestion, device antennas and the Wi-Fi generation can all reduce the useful rate or add retransmissions. Ethernet replaces that radio hop with a wired link and is usually easier to keep stable.

WHY WI-FI CAN VARY

Wi-Fi is a shared medium. Nearby networks and devices compete for airtime, and a device may change modulation or retransmit frames as conditions change. The result can be lower throughput, higher latency or more variation even though the ISP connection itself has not changed.

ETHERNET IS NOT AUTOMATICALLY UNLIMITED

A wired link can still be constrained by a 100 Mbps port, cable fault, adapter, dock, driver or router capability. A Gigabit Ethernet label also describes the local link rate rather than a guarantee that the internet service or remote destination can deliver one gigabit per second.

COMPARE FAIRLY

Use the same device when possible. Run the Wi-Fi test, then connect Ethernet without changing the ISP, destination or background workload. Repeat both sides rather than comparing one isolated run.

WHAT THE DIFFERENCE CAN TELL YOU

If Ethernet is consistently strong while Wi-Fi falls far behind in the same test period, the local wireless path becomes a reasonable place to investigate. If both links show the same limitation, the bottleneck may be elsewhere. This comparison narrows the search; it does not by itself identify a specific router, ISP or remote-server fault.
